Chinese version of "Mamma Mia!" coming to Beijing, Guangzhou

The Chinese version of the classic musical "Mamma Mia!" will hit the stage in Guangzhou and Beijing from November this year, the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center announced Tuesday.

The musical, with Chinese as the 14th language version of "Mamma Mia!" since it debuted in London in 1999, will be performed at the Guangzhou Opera House and the Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts Center.

"Mamma Mia!" tells the tale of a young woman, about to get married on a Greek island, on a quest to discover the identity of her real father.

The musical has been performed worldwide over the past two decades with sales topping two billion U.S. dollars. The Chinese version has toured 24 cities in China and attracted 600,000 people since its debut in 2011.

Tian Yuan, the producer of the Chinese version, attributed its success to the adherence to the high standards of both the "British quality" and "Chinese production."

"The performance this year will maintain the musical's high standards and strive to reflect the progress of Chinese musicals in recent years," Tian said.
