FAIZABAD, Afghanistan -- Scores of Taliban militants have been killed or injured as locals staged uprising against Taliban in Kuran-o-Munjan district of Afghanistan's northern Badakhshan province on Friday, provincial police spokesman Sanaullah Ruhani said.

"People in Kuran-0-Munjan district of Afghanistan's northern Badakhshan province staged an armed uprising against Taliban insurgents Friday morning, killing and wounding scores of the rebels," Ruhani told Xinhua.(Afghanistan-Uprising)

SEOUL -- South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha on Friday held talks over the phone with her European Union (EU) counterpart to discuss the Korean Peninsula situation, Seoul's foreign ministry said.

Kang held a phone conversation with Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, for 15 minutes earlier in the day at the request of the EU side, according to the Seoul ministry.(S.Korea-EU)

SEOUL -- South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) agreed Friday to hold talks later this month about military affairs, humanitarian issues and sports exchange.

The agreement was reached after high-level officials from the two sides met at the border village of Panmunjom to discuss the implementation of the Panmunjom Declaration.(S.Korea-DPRK-Talks)

KUALA LUMPUR -- A 51-year-old housewife, who had planned to ram voters with a car on the polling day of the Malaysian election, was among 15 suspects detained by the police over terror-related activities, the police said on Friday.

The suspects, including six Filipinos, a couple from an unspecified north African country and a Bangladeshi man, were detained by the police anti-terrorism division in a series of operations between March 27 and May 9, said Mohamad Fuzi Harun, the Malaysian police chief.(Malaysia-Terror activities)

YANGON -- Myanmar has decided to establish an independent commission of inquiry as part of its initiative to achieve reconciliation, peace and development in the western state of Rakhine, according to an announcement of the President's Office.

Taking into consideration of the Interim Recommendations of the Advisory Board for the Committee for the Implementation of the Recommendations on Rakhine state, the independent commission will investigate the violation of human rights and related issues following the terror attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA).(Myanmar-Reconciliation) Enditem
