Tanzania allocates 10 mln USD for compensation of land procured by military

DAR ES SALAAM, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The government of Tanzania said on Thursday it has set aside 10 million U.S. dollars for compensation to people whose land was acquired by the Tanzania People's Defense Forces.

The Minister for Defense and National Services, Hussein Mwinyi, told parliament in the capital Dodoma that all people whose land was acquired by the army will be paid as soon as the money was released from the treasury.

Mwinyi admitted that the government was aware of the acquisition of land in the mentioned villages, noting that valuation for compensation was done in 2013.

"We have reached this far before making the payments due to limited budget but in the 2017/18 financial year, the ministry did set aside money for compensation except that it is yet to be received from the treasury," explained the minister.

On Wednesday, Mwinyi told the House the government was taking measures aimed at resolving land conflicts between villages and military camps.

"We have planned to undertake nationwide surveys to establish the magnitude of the problem and take corrective measures," said the minister.

"The conflicts have been reported in many parts of the country, thus the need to intervene," added Mwinyi. Enditem
