DPRK marks World No Tobacco Day

Xinhua,May 31, 2018 Adjust font size:

PYONGYANG, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Thursday marked "World No Tobacco Day" to reduce the number of smokers in the country.

A technical workshop was held here on the impact of tobacco on socio-economic life and the link between smoking and the blood vessel system, said the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Local health officials, doctors and representatives of international bodies attended the event, which was aimed at drawing public attention to the negative consequences of smoking cigarettes, a major risk factor for non-infectious diseases, said the KCNA.

The DPRK adopted a Tobacco Control Law in 2016 in keeping with an intensified no-smoking campaign and stipulates tobacco control as one of the state policies.

The law urges strict abidance by regulations in the cultivation, production and sale of tobacco, prohibits any advertisement or indirect publicity for tobacco and calls for expanding non-smoking areas.

The DPRK produces numerous brands of tobacco products which are very popular among its male population.

May 31 is designated World No Tobacco Day as a health awareness day by the World Health Organization. Enditem
