Israeli army arrests 2 Palestinians attempting to cross border into Israel

JERUSALEM, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Israel's army arrested on Monday two Palestinians from the Gaza Strip who had attempted to cross into Israel.

"IDF (Israel Defense Forces) troops apprehended two terrorists who attempted to infiltrate into Israel in the northern Gaza Strip with the intention of carrying out a terror attack," a military spokesperson said in a statement.

"The terrorists were found with knives, combustion material and cutters in their possession," the spokesperson said.

The Israeli troops were shot by fire from the Gaza Strip while pursuing the suspects, according to the spokesperson.

In response, an Israeli tank fired towards an adjacent military observation post. No injuries of Israeli soldiers were reported.

The casualties of the suspects were not immediately clear. A military notice said they were transferred to the Shin Bet security agency for questioning.

The incident came amid escalation between Gaza and Israel, with over 110 Palestinians killed during demonstrations that started on March 30. Enditem
