Ghana FA boss under investigation for fraud

ACCRA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday said it was investigating the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, for alleged offenses including corruption.

The probe followed a compliant received from Ghanaian president Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo that Nyantakyi had used the president's name and office fraudulently.

"Police information shows that the suspect is presently outside of the jurisdiction and is expected to return on Wednesday, May 23 whereupon he would be required to assist with the ongoing investigation," said a statement received here and signed by the director of Public Affairs, Sheilla Kessie Abayie-Buckman.

The release assured the public that due process would be followed in the investigation.

According to reports in the local media, the GFA chief is believed to be engaged in influence peddling using the name of the Ghanaian president, following an investigative piece by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

The film will be publicly screened on June 6 but the GFA boss, who is also the first vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is believed to have been caught on camera in a compromised position.

Sources say the president and his team had watched extracts of the video in which Nyantakyi was seen negotiating for an amount of money using the Ghanaian president's name. Enditem
