TRIPOLI -- 25 illegal immigrants were injured when human smugglers shot them on Wednesday northwest of Libyan capital Tripoli, as they were trying to escape from the detention, according to a security source.

"Dozens of immigrants attempted to escape from the detention location in the outskirts of Bani Walid town. While they were exiting, they were shot by human smugglers, injuring 25 of them," Salim bin Dalla, official of the police department of Bani Walid, told Xinhua. (Libya-Illegal Immigrants-Gunshot)

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that his meeting with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s top leader, Kim Jong Un, "will absolutely happen."

The summit scheduled for June 12 in Singapore "could very well happen," Trump told the media before departing to New York at the White House's South Lawn. (US-DPRK-Meeting)

MADRID -- At least one person was killed and 26 others were injured in a firework explosion in the municipality of Tui, in Spain's northwestern region of Galicia, the emergency services reported on Wednesday.

CAPE TOWN -- Unabated political killings in South Africa prompted the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to voice its condemnation on Wednesday.

This came after S'fiso Ngcobo, chairperson of the Shack Dwellers' Movement, was assassinated on Tuesday in Mariannhill, west of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal Province. Another leader of the movement, Ndumiso Mnguni, was also shot in Durban and is now fighting for his life. (SA-Political-Killings)

ROME -- Italian President Sergio Mattarella on Wednesday named law professor Giuseppe Conte as Italy's new prime minister, tasking him with a mandate to form a new government.

Conte was put forward by the rightwing League and the populist Five Star Movement, the two top vote-getters in Italy's March 4 election, as their choice for prime minister earlier this week. (Italy-PM) Enditem
