BERLIN, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Philipp Mwene joins Mainz from second division side Kaiserslautern on a free transfer, the "Nullfuenfer" announced in an official statement on Wednesday.

Mainz have increased the options in their defence after signing defender Philipp Mwene, who inked a three-year deal until summer 2021.

"Philipp Mwene is a very strong and versatile attacking full back, who has developed constantly to become a go-to player in the second division. We see his potential to make the next step with us and are pleased that he has opted for Mainz," sporting director Rouven Schroeder said.

The 24-year-old new arrival played since July 2016 for lower league side Kaiserslautern where he made 65 appearances to provide four goals and nine assists.

"I am relay looking forward to my new club, my team and task. I see my transfer to Mainz as a great chance to prove myself on the next level. I am an offensively minded full back who always pushes actively forward," Mwene said.

Mainz completed the Bundesliga season 2017/18 on the 14th place of the standings. Enditem
