Uganda's Cheptegei to miss IAAF Diamond League events due to injury

Xinhua,May 24, 2018 Adjust font size:

KAMPALA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's star athlete Joshua Cheptegei will miss many of the IAAF Diamond League events due to a nagging knee injury.

Cheptegei told Xinhua in an interview on Wednesday that his doctors have put him on medication and advised him to take a rest.

The 24-year old did Uganda proud when he won two gold medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia.

He had hoped to take part in the IAAF Diamond League in Doha last month but withdrew because of the injury.

"It is unfortunate because this injury will rule me out of many of the IAAF Diamond League events. I had hoped to recover in time for the Nike Prefontaine Classic Diamond League in Oregon later this month, but now I have to miss it," added the star runner.

Dominic Otuchet, president Uganda Athletics Federation said it was unfortunate for the runner but he now has to take the doctors' advice.

The IAAF Diamond League events that Cheptegei is likely to miss include; Eugene, Rome, Oslo, Stockholm, Paris, Lausanne, Rabat, Monaco, London, Birmingham, Zurich and Brussels later in August.

Absence in the events will mean Cheptegei misses out on the cumulative points earned over the Circuit and cash prizes at stake. Enditem
