Tokyo stocks close lower

TOKYO, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower on Wednesday as the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 270.60 points, or 1.18 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 22,689.74.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 12.26 points, or 0.68 percent, to finish the day at 1,797.31.

Mining, oil and coal product, and marine transportation-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play. Enditem
