Crane collapses in the Grand Mosque in Saudi's Mecca

Xinhua,May 22, 2018 Adjust font size:

RIYADH, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Part of a crane fell in the Grand Mosque in Mecca in Saudi Arabia, with one worker slightly injured, Sabq local online news reported Sunday.

The Mecca region authority tweeted that the accident took place in a worksite in the mosque that is away from the routes of worshipers and visitors.

The accident brings the bitter memory of the death of at least 107 people when a crane collapsed onto the Grand Mosque in Mecca in 2015. Over 230 people were also injured.

Saudis civil defence head said the collapse is caused by strong winds and heavy rains. The deadly mishap led to a long court case and around 8.5 million U.S. dollars compensations for the victims and their families. Enditem
