Libyan security force foils armed attempt to sabotage capital Tripoli

Xinhua,May 22, 2018 Adjust font size:

TRIPOLI, May 21 (Xinhua) -- The special deterrent force of the Libyan Ministry of Interior has foiled an attempt of an armed organization's subversive operations in the capital Tripoli.

The force said in a statement on Monday that suspected people have been monitored and the armed operation has been identified with information provided ahead of the attempt.

"Information was collected and suspected persons were monitored. The location of the operating chamber, from which they were ready to carry out their armed operations, was identified," the statement said, adding that the operation was carried out with the support of so-called Popular Front for the Liberation of Libya, formed by supporters of the former leader Gaddafi.

Seven individuals were arrested, including three military officers, the statement revealed.

According to preliminary investigations, they confessed to moving towards the capital to carry out sabotage operations.

The investigations also revealed that the arrested individuals had prior coordination with some cells in all Libyan cities.

The special deterrent force in October 2017 foiled a similar attempt to take over Tripoli and overthrow the government, led by members of the former regime. Enditem
