Yellow fever deaths climb to over 400 in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian authorities announced Thursday that deaths from a yellow fever outbreak have risen to 409 from last July to May 8.

The Health Ministry issued an alert stating that most of the deaths have been in the southeast of the country, Brazil's most populated area with the states of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

Beyond the 409 deaths, there have been 1,261 confirmed cases of yellow fever and 1,301 suspected cases.

Since the disease spread by mosquitoes is more active in summer months, Brazil tallies the cases of yellow fever from July last year. This approach means that seasonal outbreaks are therefore not divided.

Due to the spread of the disease, the Brazilian government expanded its vaccination drive against yellow fever to the whole country in March. Nearly 78 million people will have been vaccinated by 2019.

The strain of yellow fever in Brazil is the jungle type and spreads via the Haemagogus and Sabethese mosquitoes, mainly in wooded areas. Enditem
