U.S. casino tycoon contributes 30 mln dollars to Republicans: report

LOS ANGELES, May 10 (Xinhua) -- U.S. casino mogul Sheldon Adelson cut a 30 million U.S. dollars check to the Republican Party-affiliated Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) to boost the party's efforts to keep a majority in the House in mid-term elections this November, Politico reported Thursday.

The CFL is a super political action committee (PAC) dedicated to securing a GOP majority in the House of Representatives.

According to the news outlet, the donation was locked by House Speaker Paul Ryan after a meeting with Adelson in Las Vegas last week at the Venetian Hotel, which the businessman owns.

Also attending the meeting were Adelson's wife Miriam, Norm Coleman, the former Minnesota senator who chairs the Republican Jewish Coalition, Corry Bliss, who oversees CLF; and Jake Kastan, Ryan's political aide, the report said.

Since Ryan is not permitted to solicit seven-figure political donations as a federally elected official, the contribution was asked and secured when he left the room, according to the report.

Adelson, who is the Republic Party's biggest campaign supporter, gave 10 million U.S. dollars in August 2016 for that year's elections, in which Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton.

"Adelson's donation comes at a perilous moment for House Republicans, who are facing growing headwinds as they try to save their majority," the report commented.

The latest report of Federal Election Commission (FEC) said that the Democrats have had a series of successful fundraising hauls in the lead up to November's contests, as 40 House Democratic candidates outraised Republican incumbents in the first fundraising quarter of 2018. Enditem
