Injured Uganda's double gold medalist Cheptegei heads to Europe for recovery

Xinhua,May 11, 2018 Adjust font size:

KAMPALA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The 2018 Commonwealth Games double gold medalist Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda left for Netherlands to treat his knee injury.

Dominic Otuchet, president of the Uganda Athletics Federation, told Xinhua in an interview on Thursday that Cheptegei who left on Monday has had the injury for sometime.

Cheptegei helped Uganda finish in 15th place at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia last month when he won gold medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m races.

Otuchet said it was a wise decision for Cheptegei to seek medical advice from the experts in the Netherlands ahead of a busy season which will have several IAAF Diamond League events and the Africa Senior Championships to take place in Nigeria.

"We are confident that Cheptegei's injured knee will heal in time ahead of the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League in Oregon," Otuchet said.

Cheptegei, who had registered for the IAAF Doha Diamond League, withdrew from the event that took place on May 4, but he will take part in the meet in Oregon slated for May 25-26. Enditem
