Uzbek president to meet Trump at White House

Xinhua,May 10, 2018 Adjust font size:

WASHINGTON, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The White House announced on Thursday that Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev will visit the U.S. president's residence and workplace on May 16.

It's the first time that the Uzbek president will be visiting the White House.

The White House said President Donald Trump will welcome Mirziyoyev on the latter's "historic first visit" here.

Trump and Mirziyoyev will discuss trade and investment and regional security, including developments in Afghanistan.

On Jan. 16, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev visited the White House and promised to continue to provide critical logistical support and access for Western troops fighting terrorism.

In April, Trump announced his Afghanistan strategy, saying the United States, instead of withdrawing its troops from the violence-hit country, will increase its military presence there. Central Asia plays an important role in this strategy. Enditem
