Australian authorities arrest 3 suspects for smuggling 200 kg of crystal methamphetamine

Xinhua,May 10, 2018 Adjust font size:

SYDNEY, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Three men have been arrested and charged over drug offences in a multi-agency operation that netted 200 kg of the illegal substance "ice" in Australia's New South Wales state capital Sydney, authorities said on Thursday.

The drugs, estimated to be worth more than 150 million Australian dollars (112.2 million U.S. dollars), were hidden inside machinery on a shipping container from Malaysia, according to a joint statement from agencies including state and federal police, the border force and criminal intelligence commission.

The metal lathes used to smuggle the drugs had packages marked as tea that contained a crystalline white substance presumptively testing positive for crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as the party drug "ice," the statement said. The shipment was intercepted and the suspects were arrested earlier this week.

Investigations were ongoing regarding the source of the shipment, said Detective Superintendent Stephen Dametto from the federal police. Enditem
