Preliminary results show independents win Tunisian municipal elections

TUNIS, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Independent candidates came out on top of Tunisia's municipal election, garnering nearly one-third of the vote, more than the country's major parties, an electoral official said Wednesday evening.

Independents garnered 32.27 percent of the vote, while the Islamist party Ennahda came in the second with 28.64 percent, followed by the party Nidaa Tounes with 20.85 percent, announced Mohamed Tlili Mansri, president of the Independent High Authority for Elections.

Voter participation stood at 35.6 percent.

"Through this election, Tunisia has once again shown that it could be a successful model to inspire others throughout the region and around the world," said Mansri.

Mansri insisted that the success of the local elections was in itself an exceptional event, citing more "integration of women and young people in political life."

More than 5.3 million voters were registered to vote in the first municipal elections since 2011, but only one-third turned out.

The final results will be announced on June 13, after all the appeals are processed. Enditem
