DAMASCUS -- The Syrian air defenses responded to Israeli missile attack after midnight in the southern province of Qunaitera, state TV reported early Thursday.

The event took place amid heightened tensions after the Israelis fired rockets on military positions in Qunaitera, and after rockets slammed Israeli military sites in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. (Syria-Air Defenses)

MEXICO -- Three soldiers died and three more were wounded during an attack by gunmen in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, authorities announced on Wednesday.

The Ministry of National Defense said the soldiers were attacked on Tuesday night at a ranch named El Pozo, in the municipality of Coyuca de Catalan, after answering an anonymous tip-off that armed men were on the site. (Mexico-Soldiers-Attack)

ABUJA -- Nine people were killed early Wednesday in a fresh attack by gunmen in Nigeria's northeastern state of Taraba, a police spokesman said.

Three others were wounded in the attack in Tutuwa community located in Ussa area of the state, according to David Misal, the police spokesman. (Nigeria-Attack)

DAMASCUS -- Ten Israeli military positions in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights were targeted overnight Wednesday by rocket fire at a time when Israel hit Syrian positions in the southern province of Qunaitera amid heightened tension, according to the pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV.

The targeted Israeli military sites include a military reconnaissance center, a position for border security, a military center for electronic jamming, a military center for spying on wireless and wired networks, a communication station, an observatory for precision weapons, a gunships heliport, the headquarters of the regional military command of brigade-810, the command center of the military battalion in Hermon, and the winter headquarters of the special snow unit, according to the report.
