British stocks up 1.28 pct Wednesday

LONDON, May 9 (Xinhua) -- British stocks rose on Wednesday, with the benchmark FTSE 100 Index up 96.77 points or 1.28 percent, closing at 7,662.52 points.

Imperial Brands, a multinational tobacco company, soared 6.17 percent, the top gainer of the blue chips. BP and Evraz rose by 3.92 percent and 3.51 percent, respectively.

Burberry Group was the worst performer in the blue chips, with its shares losing 6.08 percent. Compass Group, a catering and support services supplier, dropped 4.77 percent. Rolls-Royce Holdings, a British pre-eminent engineering company, dropped 1.54 percent. Enditem
