Update: Rocket fire kills 2 in Syrian capital

DAMASCUS, May 9 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and 14 others wounded when rockets targeted areas in the heart of the capital Damascus Wednesday, according to the state TV.

The TV said a rocket slammed the street near the roundabout of the Maysat neighborhood north of Damascus but didn't immediately explode. It added that the rocket bounced and hit a nearby car, then it exploded and destroyed the car completely while killing two people.

In the Marjeh area in central Damascus, another rocket hit a trade center called the Damascus Center, causing damages.

A fire broke out after the rocket attack, of which details are still murky with the official media outlets saying the attacks were "terrorists" without naming the perpetrator.

Initial speculations indicated that the Islamic State (IS) might be behind the attack, as the areas it controls in southern Damascus are the last rebel-held areas after the government forces secured the vicinity of Damascus and dislodged the rebels last month from Eastern Ghouta countryside, the launching place of mortar attacks on Damascus.

The Syrian army has been on a crushing offensive against IS in the Hajar al-Aswad and nearby areas south of Damascus. The terror group fired several mortars over the past few days hitting areas close to Hajar al-Aswad, but this is the first time Marjeh and Maysat get hit after the liberation of Eastern Ghouta.
