SYDNEY, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The Melbourne Victory defeated the Chinese-owned Newcastle Jets 1-0 at McDonald Jones Stadium Saturday night, becoming the first team in Australian football history to win the A-League title for a record fourth time.

Despite a strong start from the home side, the Victory opened the scoring with a free kick just nine minutes in. Melbourne continued to keep Newcastle at bay in the second half andsealed the victory.

While Newcastle missed out on the championship, it has been a fairy-tale season for the Jets. Purchased in June 2016 by Martin Lee, chairman of the Shenzhen-based Ledman Optoelectronic Group, the side went from last place in 2017 to this year's finalists with a record crowd of more than 30,000 in attendance and a surge of new supporters for the club.
