ISLAMABAD -- Pakistani Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal was shot and injured in an assassination attempt during a rally in Narowal district of the country's eastern Punjab province on Sunday evening, police said.

District Police Officer of Narowal Imran Kishwar said a local resident opened fire at the minister soon after he concluded his speech during a rally in Kanjrur town of the district. (Pakistan-Minister-Assassination)

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Violence in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir Sunday killed 10 people and left many others injured, officials said.

Five militants were killed fighting Indian troops, while five civilians were shot dead during clashes that broke out after the gunfight in village Badigam of Shopian, 62 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir. (India-Kashmir-Unrest)

KABUL -- At least 12 people were confirmed dead and 23 others injured as a blast targeted a voter registration center inside a mosque in Khost city, the capital of eastern Afghanistan's Khost province, on Sunday.

Gul Mohammaddin Mangal, a health official in the province said 12 dead bodies and 23 injured persons have so far been taken to hospital. (Afghanistan-Blast)

NEW DELHI -- The Indian government is in touch with Afghanistan authorities to ascertain the whereabouts of the Indian nationals abducted in Afghanistan on Sunday, an official said.

"We are aware of the abduction of Indian nationals from Baghlan province in Afghanistan. We are in contact with the Afghan authorities and further details are being ascertained," an official spokesperson said, responding to reports of the abduction. (Afghanistan-India-Abduction)

ISLAMABAD -- The death toll of Pakistan's two separate coal mine collapses, which took place on Saturday in southwestern Balochistan province, rose to 23, officials said on Sunday.

Chief Inspector of Mines Iftikhar Ahmad said the death toll rose after five more bodies were recovered from a mine in Margit area near Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan. (Pakistan-Mine Collapse-Toll)

PHNOM PENH -- The death toll from drinking contaminated water in eastern Cambodia's Kratie province has risen to 10, as 121 others were hospitalized, Om Phy, deputy police chief of Kratie province, said Sunday.

"Four more victims were confirmed dead at the Kratie Provincial Hospital and the Phnom Penh's Calmette Hospital today, bringing the number of the dead to 10, as the number of villagers hospitalized has reached 121," he told Xinhua, adding that the dead were four men and six women.
