CAPE TOWN, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The following are news items in South African major news outlets on Sunday.

-- The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) said on Saturday that mine safety has become a human rights issue and that legislation should be strengthened to hold mining bosses criminally accountable for failing to ensure safety at operations.

This came after seven workers lost their lives at Sibanye-Stillwater's Masakhane Mine on Thursday following two seismic events. (News24)

-- The office of embattled North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo said on Saturday it has received news about a plot to assassinate him.

In a statement, the premier's spokesman Brian Setswambung said the plot involves hiring hitmen who have already been paid 250,000 rand (about 20,000 U.S. dollars). (Eyewitness News)

-- Management of the Sibanye-Stillwater mine in Carletonville, Gauteng Province has confirmed that the bodies of all seven mineworkers who were trapped underground after a seismic event have been retrieved.

Thirteen mineworkers were trapped three kilometres underground on Thursday. (South African Broadcasting Corporation) Enditem
