CAPE TOWN, May 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are news items in South African major news outlets on Saturday:

-- The battle for control of the provinces within the African National Congress (ANC) is officially underway with the party giving the green light for some provinces to prepare for elective conferences.

The regional and provincial conferences are expected to again pit party factions against each other following the December elective conference that saw President Cyril Ramaphosa win by a slim majority. (News24)

-- The death toll in a seismic event at Sibanye-Stillwater's Driefontein mine near Carletonville, Gauteng Province has now risen to seven after the body of another miner was discovered on Saturday morning.

Mine management said he appears to have succumbed to his injuries. (Eyewitness News)

-- Another seismic event struck the area near Sibanye-Stillwater mine on Gauteng's far West Rand on Friday. The latest event was more powerful than the lethal shaker from Thursday that claimed four lives.
