LONDON, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Former Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard was confirmed Friday as the new manager of Glasgow Rangers.

Rangers announced Gerrard will join the club this summer on a four-year deal.

The Liverpool legend has been the number one target at Ibrox to be their next manager, with Gerrard revealing that talks with the famous Scottish club started on Tuesday.

Former manager Graeme Murty parted company with Rangers earlier this week, with Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson in caretaker charge until the end of this season.

Rangers are currently two places behind their Glasgow rivals, Celtic, currently topping the Scottish Premier League.

Gerrard has been in charge of the Under-18s team at Liverpool, and the move to Scotland is his first big venture into top-flight management.

Gerrard said: "I am honored to become the next manager of Rangers. I have enormous respect for this football club, and its history and tradition.

"I can't wait to start this new journey at Rangers as we look to build on the many successes that this club has achieved."

Rangers chairman Dave King added:"We are delighted to confirm today that Steven Gerrard will become the next manager of Rangers.

"From the very beginning, talks have been extremely positive and we believe that Steven is the right man to drive Rangers forward." Enditem
