NAIROBI, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Only seven teams have confirmed participation in this year's Cecafa Women's Championship, which will be held in Kigali, Rwanda from May 12-22.

Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye said teams including host Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Djibouti and defending champions Tanzania will participate in the competition.

Two more teams may be added from Zanzibar and Burundi. Sudan and South Sudan have given the tournament a bye.

"We have seven teams coming in. However that may increase to nine by next week as we wait for Burundi and Zanzibar," Musonye said on Friday in Nairobi.

Cecafa skipped this tournament last year owing to lack of sponsorship. However, with more women football funding coming in from FIFA, Musonye remains optimistic the women football development will gain traction. Enditem
