Alma Guillermoprieto wins Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities

MADRID, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Mexican investigative journalist Alma Guillermoprieto was on Thursday confirmed as the winner of the 2018 Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities.
The jury decided the journalist should be granted one of the most prestigious awards in Spain for "her longstanding career and her deep knowledge of the complex reality of Latin America, which she has also conveyed with enormous courage in the field of communication of the English-speaking world, thereby building bridges throughout the American continent."
The jury concluded that with her "forceful and committed writing, Alma Guillermoprieto represents the finest values of journalism in contemporary society."
Guillermoprieto is the second of the eight prize winners to be named in the 38th edition of the Princess of Asturias Awards.
Last week saw veteran U.S. film director Martin Scorsese named as the winner of the 2018 Arts awards and the winners of the remaining six categories: International Cooperation, Sports, Literature, Social Sciences, Concord and Technical and Scientific Research, will be announced over the coming weeks.
The Princess of Asturias Awards are presented in a gala ceremony attended by King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and the Infanta Leonor, the Princess of Asturias and the heir to the Spanish throne, in the city of Oviedo, north Spain, every October.
Prize winners earn a 50,000 euro-cash prize and a special statue created by the artist Joan Miro. (1 euro = 1.20 U.S. dollars) Enditem
