Sudan reassesses military participation in anti-Houthi coalition in Yemen

KHARTOUM, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Sudan said Wednesday it is reconsidering its military participation in the Arab alliance to fight the Houthi rebels and support the internationally-recognized government in Yemen.

"We are conducting a study to assess the participation of the Sudanese troops in the alliance, including the advantages and disadvantages of this participation," Ali Mohamed Salem, Sudan's state minister for defense, said in a statement.

The final decision will be made for the interests of Sudan as well as its security and stability, while ensuring the country's fulfilment of its regional and international commitments, he noted.

Sudan has been part of the Saudi-led Arab coalition against Houthi rebels in Yemen since March 26, 2015.

However, the Alliance for Change, which brings together independent members of the Sudanese parliament, recently issued a statement demanding the withdrawal of Sudanese troops from Yemen. Enditem
