3 killed in roadside bomb attacks in Iraq's Diyala

BAQUBA, Iraq, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed Wednesday and four others wounded in two roadside bomb attacks in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, a provincial police source said.

In one incident, a roadside bomb went off near a car near the town of Udheim, some 60 km north of Diyala's provincial capital Baquba, leaving a young man and his two sisters killed, Major Alaa al-Sa'di told Xinhua.

In another attack, a roadside bomb was detonated on a road in a rural area near the town of Maqdadiyah, some 45 km northeast of Baquba, wounding four people, two of them were seriously injured, Sa'di said.

Despite its defeat in Iraq last year, some remnants of Islamic State (IS) militants are still hiding in the rugged areas near the border with Iran in eastern Diyala, as well as the sprawling areas in west and north of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad.

The militants are still capable of carrying out attacks against civilians and the security forces despite operations from time to time to hunt them down. Enditem
