Kenya's Yego chases redemption at the Doha Diamond League

NAIROBI, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan Olympic javelin silver medallist Julius Yego heads to Qatar hopeful of making a mark at the Doha Diamond League meeting on Friday.

Yego, who started badly this season at the Commonwealth Games and missed out on making the finals, wants a quick rebound as the competition kicks off in Doha.

He will face a stern test as he comes up against Olympic javelin champion Thomas Rohler and Commonwealth Games winner Neeraj Chopra of India.

"I have no problems since shaking off my ankle and groin injuries. I had a slip at the Gold Coast, which was down to poor officiating. But I am back to my training and head to Doha confident of doing well," Yego said Wednesday in Nairobi.

The Africa record holder sees the continental championships in Asaba, Nigeria from August 1-5 as a chance to reclaim his African crown. But first, he wants to focus on the Diamond League to see if he can improve on his personal best throw.

"Never let one slip determine your ambitions. Always forge ahead. My new season starts in Doha and now the Commonwealth Games is behind me," Yego said.

Starting with Doha, Yego will be up against Olympic champion Thomas Rohler of Germany and all three medalists from London 2017.

Also in the mix is rising star, 20-year-old Neeraj Chopra of India, who is the 2016 Under-20 World Champion, 2017 Asian Champion and record-holder, and recent gold-medallist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Rohler last year wowed the crowds in Doha as he threw an incredible 93.90m to move him to second on the all-time list behind world-record holder Jan Zelezny. Enditem
