SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, May 2 (Xinhua) -- A gunfight between militants and Indian troops Wednesday broke out in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at village Turkawangam in Shopian district, about 45 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A gunfight has started just now between militants and government forces in Turkawangam village here," a senior police official posted in Shopian told Xinhua. "Two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area."

Reports said no sooner the gunfight broke out locals took to streets and clashed with police apparently in a bid to break cordon and help militants escape.
