Mass rally in Moscow to mark May Day

MOSCOW, May 1 (Xinhua) -- About 130,000 people attended a gathering in downtown Moscow Tuesday to celebrate the International Workers' Day, the Russian Interior Ministry said in a press release.

The event was organized by the Moscow Trade Union Federation, it said, adding that law enforcement officers maintained public order during the rally.

The participants marched through the Red Square holding the national flag, balloons and signs reading "Peace," "Labor," and "May."

According to a TASS report, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, national and city lawmakers attended the rally. Sobyanin promised to make all efforts to improve the living standards of citizens.

May Day is an official holiday in Russia. People can enjoy a four-day leave this year from Sunday to Wednesday. Enditem
