Lightning kills 11 in India's Bihar

NEW DELHI, April 30 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 people were killed and eight injured after lightning struck them at different places in India's eastern state of Bihar, officials said Monday.

The casualties were reported from Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Supaul, Bhagalpur, Madhepura and Purnia districts of the state.

"The casualties have been reported during the past 24 hours," an official said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed grief over the deaths and asked health officials to ensure proper treatment of those injured in the natural disasters.

The meteorological department in the state has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by squall over isolated places in Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal during the next 48 hours.

As per India's National Crime Records Bureau, over 2,000 people have died in lightning strikes in India every year since 2005. Enditem
