NEW DELHI, April 29 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people are feared drowned after a boat capsized in a river in the eastern Indian state of Bihar on Sunday, police said.

The mishap happened in Kosi river in the state's Bhagalpur district.

"The boat carrying 15 people, more than its loaded capacity, capsized in the river this evening. While seven people swam to safety, eight are still missing," a police official said.

Local TV channels reported that the boat was meant for fishing but some people got into it while returning from a marriage function.

"A massive search operation is on," the official added.

This is the third such incident in Bihar this year.

An overloaded boat capsized in state capital Patna on Jan. 31, killing five people. Some 25 people drowned in a similar incident on Jan. 14. Enditem
