Uganda Cubs beat Kenya 4-1 to finish third in CECAFA U-17 championship

KAMPALA, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Uganda Cubs have stopped Kenya 4-1 to finish third at the 2018 CECAFA U-17 championship in Burundi.
In the playoff game played at the Ngozi Stadium on Saturday, the 2009 champions Uganda Cubs took a 2-0 half time lead with goals from Rogers Mugisha and Juma Ibrahim.
After the interval, Mugisha and Ibrahim added two more goals for Uganda Cubs, while Isaiah Abwel netted the consolation goal for the Kenya team.
"We are happy that our U-17 team has won a bronze medal in Burundi. We shall continue to develop and give the youngsters chance to play many more games," said Edgar Watson, the CEO of the Uganda FA.
To reach the playoff, Uganda Cubs lost to surprise package Somalia 1-0 at the semifinal. Uganda Cubs started the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Tanzania, before defeating Sudan 3-0 in their second group B game.
On Sunday, Somalia will battle Tanzania in the final which will be graced by Ahmad Ahmad, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). "We are delighted that the CAF President has accepted to grace the final on Sunday," Nicholas Musonye, the secretary general of the Council for East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) said.
The regional tournament is financed by FIFA under the FIFA forward program. Next month action will shift to the CECAFA women's championship slated for May 12-22 in Kigali, Rwanda. Enditem
