Nuclear deal fails to modify Iran's behavior: Pompeo

RIYADH, April 29 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Sunday in Riyadh that the nuclear agreement failed to modify Iran's behavior that supports violence in Yemen by training and arming militias.

The U.S. official accused Iran of being the largest supporter of terrorism, citing the readiness of Washington to stand with Saudi Arabia to combat terrorism, Al Arabiya local news reported.

He also said that Iran disturbs the security of the region through arming the Houthi rebels in Yemen, highlighting that the nuclear deal had failed to correct Iran's violating moves in Yemen.

He asserted that Saudi Arabia's security is a priority for the United States.

Meanwhile, His Saudi counterpart Adel al-Jubeir told a joint conference that the two countries agreed on many issues, stressing the need to impose more sanctions on Iran for its continuous violations.

"We support (U.S. President Donald) Trump's policy toward Iran, especially with regard to the nuclear agreement," the Saudi foreign minister said.

Pompeo arrived in Riyadh on Saturday as the beginning of a regional tour. He will also visit Jordan and Israel.

The U.S. State Department spokeswoman said Saturday that Saudi Arabia has an important leadership role in working towards a peaceful and prosperous future in the region, saying that the United States and Saudi Arabia are working to achieve this goal for the region. Enditem
