ABUJA, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Twelve people have been confirmed dead following a road accident in Nigeria's southwest region late Saturday, according to the traffic police on Sunday.

Five others were injured in the accident which involved a truck and a bus along the 127.6 km-long Lagos-Ibadan expressway, Babatunde Akinbiyi, a spokesman of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency in the southwest of Nigeria, told Xinhua.

Akinbiyi said the accident was caused by wrongful overtaking by the bus driver coming from an opposite direction. This led to a head-on collision with the oncoming truck.

He said the injured victims have been taken to a government hospital for treatment. Enditem
