PHNOM PENH, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Five local people were killed and two others were injured in a collision between a tanker truck and a Lexus SUV on Saturday in Southwest Cambodia's Koh Kong province, a local police chief said.

The fatal crash took place at 7:30 a.m. local time on National Road 4 in Sre Ambel district when the two vehicles, driven in an opposite direction, hit head-on, said Ma Ty, police chief of Sre Ambel district.

"All five people in the Lexus SUV were killed on the spot and two others in the tanker truck were injured in the crash," he told Xinhua, adding that the truck carried the empty oil tank when it met the accident.

The Lexus SUV and the tanker truck cabin burst into flames following the collision, he said, adding that the Lexus SUV was likely to be blamed for the crash.

Death toll from road traffic accidents remains high in Cambodia. In 2017, some 1,780 people were killed in the accidents, as 5,539 others got injured, according to a government report. Enditem
