Japan's Subaru admits mileage, emissions data fabrication

TOKYO, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Japan's Subaru Corp. admitted in a report it submitted to the government on Friday that one of its plants systematically doctored mileage and emissions data for 903 new cars.

According to the carmaker, the malpractice, starting as early as 2002, occurred at its Ota plant in Gunma prefecture.

The misconduct affected all of its nine models, as well as Toyota's 86 sports cars which Subaru manufactures, said the carmaker.

Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, president of Subaru, apologized to the public at a press conference Friday and vowed to take measures to prevent the malpractice from happening again.

But the company said that it currently has no plan to recall the cars affected, as no quality issues were found.

The malpractice dealt another blow to the Japanese carmaker after it admitted last year to having unauthorized staff conducting inspections of new cars. Enditem
