Lebanese expats participate in polls for 1st time

Xinhua,April 27, 2018 Adjust font size:

BEIRUT, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese expatriates kicked off Friday the parliamentary polls by voting at the Lebanese embassies in the Arab and Gulf states, the National News Agency (NNA) reported.

It is the first time in Lebanon's history that expatriates cast their votes, after the Lebanese parliament approved in June 2017 a new electoral law based on proportionality which allows the expatriates to participate in the elections.

According to the NNA, 12,611 Lebanese voters registered in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Egypt will be the first to cast ballots for the 128 seats in Lebanon's parliament.

Voters elsewhere in the world will vote on Sunday, a week before the May 6 polling in Lebanon, which has not renewed its parliament since 2009. Enditem
