Danish submarine inventor sentenced to life in prison for killing Swedish journalist

COPENHAGEN, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Danish submarine inventor Peter Madsen who admitted dismembering a Swedish female journalist and discarding her body last August was convicted of killing her and sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday.

"Given all of the evidence, the court has concluded that Madsen is guilty of murdering Kim Wall," a judge read the verdict in Copenhagen City Court.

Madsen said last October in an interview with police that Wall died of carbon monoxide poisoning while on the deck of the submarine built by Madsen, an 18-meter vessel named UC3 Nautilus.

He also acknowledged that he had dismembered Wall, who was last seen on Aug. 10 last year when she went inside the submarine with Madsen.

However, he said earlier that Wall died when she was hit by a heavy hatch on her head and he subsequently threw the body intact into the ocean.

Madsen was rescued shortly before the vessel sank and brought back to Copenhagen on Aug. 11 last year.

He was then charged with manslaughter and the prosecution has requested he undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Copenhagen police said that Wall's legs, arms and head were removed deliberately, and that the body had been tampered with to make it sink. Enditem
