Timor Leste beat hosts Brunei 1-0 in ASEAN Youth Football Tournament opener

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Timor Leste upset hosts Brunei 1-0 in the 6th Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy ASEAN Youth Football Tournament opener here on Monday night.

The host team suffered a sudden strike in the first half by a penalty kick, and the guest team managed to maintain the score till the end of the match.

A total of 7 U-22 teams from the Southeast Asian region will be competing for the trophy in the biennial tournament along with a cash prize of 20,000 Brunei dollars (15,200 U.S. dollars) for the winners, 10,000 Brunei dollars (7,600 U.S. dollars) for the runner-up and 5,000 Brunei dollars(3,800 U.S. dollars) for joint third-place.

Brunei are in Group A with Thailand, Myanmar and Timor-Leste. Group B witnesses Laos, Cambodia and Singapore. The top two finishers of each group advance to the semifinals.

The Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy ASEAN Youth Football Tournament was initiated by Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah back in 1997. The first tournament was won by Indonesia in 2002. Brunei beat arch rival Indonesia 2-0 in the 2012 final to clinch the title, but conceded the crown to Myanmar in 2014. Enditem
