Sitaram Yechury re-elected general secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist)

NEW DELHI, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of India (Marxist) Sunday re-elected Sitaram Yechury as the party's general secretary for a second term, the CPI-M said.

The decision was taken during party's 22nd congress in Hyderabad.

Yechury's re-election has reinforced his position on an electoral understanding with the Congress party in the upcoming India's general elections in 2019.

The election of the 65-year-old Yechury was approved by the party's newly-elected 95-member central committee.

Yechury took over as general secretary from Karat in the 21st party Congress, which was held in Visakhapatnam in 2015.

Karat was against any association with the Congress.

The CPI-M allows for a maximum of two terms to its general secretaries. Enditem
