American man found guilty in death of Saudi student

Xinhua,April 20, 2018 Adjust font size:

CHICAGO, April 18 (Xinhua) -- A jury in the U.S. state of Wisconsin has found a 28-year-old man guilty of aggravated battery which led to the death of a Saudi student in 2016.

Cullen Osburn, the defendant, has been acquitted of more serious murder charge. The victim, 24-year-old Saudi Arabia national Hussain Alnahdi, was a student at the University of Wisconsin.

Osburn was accused of punching Alnahdi during a fight outside of a pizza restaurant in downtown Menomonie in October 2016, with the later falling to the ground and suffering a brain injury that led to his death. Osburn was arrested weeks later.

Authorities in Wisconsin initially investigated the case as a possible hate crime, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations also offered a reward for clues in the case. But later they found no evidence that the killing was motivated by race.

Court records showed that the 12-member jury on Tuesday unanimously found the defendant guilty of aggravated battery.

Osburn will be sentenced on July 13. He faces a jail term up to 8 years. Enditem
