2nd LD-Writethru: 5.9-magnitude quake hits southern Iran, nuke plant operation not affected

TEHRAN, April 19 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 5.9 in magnitude shook Kaki region in Iran's southern Bushehr province on Thursday, but it did not affect the operation of a nearby nuclear power plant.
Iran Seismological Center said that the quake took place at 11:05 a.m. local time (0635 GMT). The epicenter of the quake, with a depth of 18 km, was estimated at 28.353 degrees north latitude and 51.559 degrees east longitude.
Rescue operators have been dispatched to the quake area, but there has been no immediate report of damage or casualties.
The earthquake has not damaged Iran's Bushehr nuclear power station as its operation continued normally, local media reported.
The power and water distribution systems in the region were also not disrupted, Bushehr Governor Abdollah Naderi told the official IRNA news agency.
Iran, which sits on major chasms of Earth's plates, has been hit by earthquakes of different magnitude almost daily. In last November, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake shook western Iran, killing at least 530 people and injured more than 8,000 others. Enditem
