Kenya to promote good governance structures to end marginalization

Xinhua,April 18, 2018 Adjust font size:

NAIROBI, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Kenya plans to promote good governance structures across national and county governments in a bid to end marginalization of communities, a senior government official said on Wednesday.

Fred Matiang'i, Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, told journalists in Nairobi that poor governance has over the years led to uneven distribution of national resources.

"As government we will promote good governance so that no Kenyan feels excluded from national development," Matiang'i said during the launch of the book dubbed Bridging Ethnic Divides: A Commissioner's Experience on Cohesion and Integration by Alice Nderitu.

Matiang'i said that it is unfortunate that after more than 50 years of independence some citizens still feel excluded from national development.

"This has led to resentment as some communities feel as if they have not benefited from the fruits of independence," he said.

The CS noted that the government is also promoting equity through an equalization fund that finances development projects in areas that we were traditionally marginalized.

Matiang'i noted that following the 2007 election where Kenyans fought along ethnic lines over the presidential elections, the country established a number of institutions aimed at strengthening national cohesion.

He added that the education curriculum will be reformed to ensure that learners are inculcated with national values of appreciating diversity in order to promotion social cohesion. Enditem
