UN chief welcomes appointment of premier in Guinea-Bissau

UNITED NATIONS, April 17 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday welcomed the appointment of Aristides Gomes as prime minister of Guinea-Bissau and the announcement that the country's legislative elections will take place on Nov. 18, 2018.

The secretary-general is encouraged by the spirit of compromise and leadership demonstrated by President Jose Mario Vaz and the major political parties, said Stephane Dujarric, Guterres' spokesman, in a statement.

The UN chief urged all parties to promptly take the next crucial steps, including the formation of an inclusive government, reopening of the National Assembly and implementation of the remaining provisions of the Conakry Agreement, said the statement.

Guterres said the United Nations will continue to work with regional organizations in supporting peacebuilding and consolidation efforts in Guinea-Bissau.

The tiny West African country has been in a political crisis since August 2015, when Vaz sacked then Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Pereira.

Gomes was appointed on Monday and was immediately sworn in. Enditem
