1st LD: Slovak interior minister resigns

BRATISLAVA, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Slovak Interior Minister Tomas Drucker announced his resignation on Monday, facing protests demanding the sacking of the Police Corps President Tibor Gaspar.

Drucker, who took the post just weeks ago, said he didn't find justification to dismiss Gaspar.

"If I think that Tibor Gaspar's direct ousting is wrong, and so if I'm to create a certain polarisation instead of reducing it, I think that, given these circumstances, I have no right to remain in the post of interior minister," said Drucker, who earlier asked for some time to decide on Gaspar's future.

Mass protects have been staged in the country, demanding the fire of Gaspar to ensure the thorough probe into the murder of journalist Jan Kuciak in February.

The Opposition and President Andrej Kiska have also been demanding Gaspar's ousting.

The murder has triggered a political crisis in Slovakia, in which the cabinet was reshuffled.

Drucker replaced Robert Kalinak as the interior minister no more than a month ago. Enditem
