THE HAGUE, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Michael Valgren of Denmark claimed the victory in the 53rd edition of the Dutch cycling classic Amstel Gold Race on Sunday.

After 260 kilometers from Maastricht to Valkenburg, the Danish rider of the Astana team sprinted to first place. It was his first Amstel Gold Race win.

Czech rider Roman Kreuziger, the winner in 2013, attacked in the final kilometers, but Valgren countered, passed his opponent and won. Italian Enrico Gasparotto, the winner in 2012 and 2016, finished third behind Valgren and Kreuziger.

Twelve seconds behind the three leaders was Peter Sagan, who won the French classic Paris-Roubaix last week, ending fourth. Alejandro Valverde became the number five in the race that wound through the hills of the southern Dutch province of Limburg. Enditem
